How to edit text in image

  1. Upload

Drop a JPG, PNG or WEBP onto the editor. Choose the clearest original you have, rather than a compressed preview or thumbnail. Keep the surrounding design visible so there is enough context for the replacement.

  2. Select

Click the text you want to replace in your image. In AI Edit, enter the original wording and its replacement in the two fields above. Include punctuation and capitalization so the intended change is clear.

  3. Download

Type the new text and download your edited image in seconds. Check spelling, spacing and nearby details before saving. Simple manual changes can take seconds; AI processing time varies with the request.

About the tool

What Pictola does

Pictola is an online AI text editor for images. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP, select the text you want to change, type the replacement, and download the finished image. AI Edit uses the original lettering as a reference for font, size, weight, colour and perspective, and rebuilds the background behind the words it removes. Results depend on the source image and may need another attempt.

AI Edit can also work with handwriting and decorative lettering, using the original strokes as a style reference. Results depend on how clearly the letters can be read and how complex the style is — connected strokes and overlapping flourishes are less consistent than printed text.

If matching the original typeface is your priority, see edit text in image with same font for that workflow. Screenshots and JPG exports use the same editor above.

Choose the mode for the job

Manual Edit suits a small correction where the lettering is easy to read, the background is simple and you want direct control over the font and style. You can also add new text. AI Edit is for changes where the original appearance matters more: lettering over a textured surface, a label shown at an angle, or a heading with a distinctive style. It uses paid Credits, so decide whether that extra processing is needed before generating.

Prepare a clear replacement

Start with one specific change and keep a copy of the original. Enter the existing wording as it appears, including spaces, numbers and punctuation. If the same wording appears in more than one place, inspect each occurrence rather than assuming every instance was handled. Consider how much room the new wording needs — a longer phrase may require smaller lettering or different line breaks, and a shorter alternative can be more practical than forcing a sentence into a small area. For dates and prices, double-check separators, decimal points and the intended order of the numbers.

Review the whole result

An exact match is not guaranteed. Compare letter shapes, weight, spacing and alignment with the surrounding words, and inspect the background where the old wording was removed — especially around fine lines, shadows, patterned paper and packaging edges. Generative processing can change nearby details, so review more than the replacement itself. Check the finished picture at the size it will be displayed: a heading that looks clear enlarged may be difficult to read in a small product card or mobile post.

Limitations and things to know

You can replace existing words or add new text to an image. Before you upload, check these format requirements, quality limitations and acceptable-use rules.

  • Very small text

Text only a few pixels tall is difficult to redraw cleanly. Upload the highest-resolution version you have and check the result.

  • Part of a word

For AI Edit, enter the whole word as it appears and the whole word as it should read. A partial word can leave the intended boundary unclear.

  • PDFs

Uploads are single images. Export the page you need as an image first.

  • IDs, passports and official documents

Editing these is prohibited under our Terms of Service, including certificates and financial records.

Read our acceptable-use rules in the Terms of Service.

Questions, answered

Formats, free editing, AI Edit and what to expect.

Can I edit text in image online for free?

Yes — Pictola runs in your browser, nothing to download or install, and no credit card to start. Signed-in users get 20 free scans per day, and one scan covers a whole image, not each text area separately. Manual Edit and standard downloads are free, with no watermark. AI Edit is optional and uses paid Credits.

What image formats can I edit?

JPG, PNG and WebP, under 7 MB and up to 40 megapixels. The editor works the same for all three, so there is no separate tool to hunt down for a JPEG or a PNG file.

How do I edit text in image without Photoshop?

Upload the image, select the detected text you want to replace, type the new words, and download. AI Edit uses the original typeface as a reference when re-rendering your text, so there is nothing to install and no layer work to do.

Can I edit text in an image and keep the original font?

Yes, with AI Edit — it aims to match the font, size, weight and colour automatically. Exact matching is not guaranteed. Free Manual Edit works differently: you choose the font yourself. Edit text in image with same font

Can I remove text from an image too?

Yes. When replacing text with AI Edit, Pictola rebuilds the background behind the removed words rather than simply covering them with a colour box. Complex backgrounds may still need another attempt; check the result.

Can I use the edited image commercially?

Yes, provided you own the original or have permission to edit and use it. Pictola does not claim ownership of your edited result. You remain responsible for third-party rights and legal requirements; do not use edits to mislead anyone. Read the Terms of Service

What if the result doesn't look right?

Try AI Edit if you used Manual Edit, or upload a higher-resolution version — small or low-contrast text is often difficult to edit. Review every result before using it. See pricing for scan allowances and Credits. See pricing
